A few years ago I reached the age of 40 and started questioning where I was going and what I was doing with my life. I had most things that I had ever wanted so why wasn't I completely satisfied? I had worked clerically in the medical field for 10 years and when I examined why I'd stayed in this field for so long, I realised that it was the patient contact and care that I really enjoyed and that working with people with terminal or chronic illness held a particular interest for me, but I wanted to do more for them. That was when I thought of counselling, and I very hesitantly made enquiries about the College's Diploma course which I commenced in November 2003.
Do not give up, you can make it. It is my objective to encourage those who are currently studying with the College to continue ambitiously with confidence.
My interest in counselling is long-standing, but only in the last few years have I seriously considered undertaking studies. I started a part time course in London which went swimmingly for the first year, until the following year's study was cancelled ‘due to lack of interest'. My desire to become a counsellor was further exacerbated by a terrific opportunity to work in a drug and alcohol clinic in London. Even though I was working in an administrative capacity, I found it absolutely fascinating and became very involved with the team and the clients - I had found my direction.
