It is an exciting accomplishment to now hold my Diploma of Professional Counselling in my hand, and indeed my heart, after two years of distance education with the College. And when that academic qualification translated recently into my long-cherished vocational goal, it felt as though some divine order had always been in place, assuaging even the most testing times experienced in 35 years in the workforce. Such is the feeling of reward as I marvel at how all the jigsaw pieces of my life, once extraneous, are now finally consolidated into counselling.
I finished the Diploma of Professional Counselling in 2005. The feeling of achievement I have as I look at my diploma perched in a special frame in a prominent space in my office far outweighs the anguish, worry and desperation I felt at times during study. My goal to be self employed in a phenomenal personal development business kept me motivated and focused. I created a vivid picture in my head of what that might look like and each morning I flicked through it like a slide show of a fabulous journey beyond my expectations.
My entry into counselling began when I was diagnosed with rapidly progressing breast cancer. As a result of this experience and the personal growth that came from the challenge I set up a support website. On being inundated with contacts of varying degrees of distress I found my extensive teaching career and pastoral care knowledge was insufficient.
